2 EIPS Students win gold in provincial skills competition

Two students from Elk Island Public Schools have won the gold medal in their event categories at the recent Skills Alberta provincial championships. James Lowes, a Grade 9 student from Vegreville Composite High won first place in Culinary Arts for junior high and Kayla Klita, a Grade 10 student from Salisbury Composite High, took the top step of the podium in Fashion Technology.

Klita has earner her spot on Team Alberta and will be heading to Regina on May 29th and 30th for Skills Canada.

“This has been such an exhilarating experience,” says Klita. “I did not expect that I’d win gold, especially as a Grade 10 student, and the fact that I’ll be representing Alberta in just a few weeks at Nationals is very exciting.  I hope to pursue a career in costume design, where I’ll be able to continue sewing and creating garments!”

The national competition is only for high school students, so Lowes won’t be attending, but winning the gold medal is a promising start for the aspiring chef.

Skills Canada has the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprenteces in the country. More than 550 competitors come from all regions of Canada to participate in over 40 skilled trade and technology competitions.

Congratulations to Kilta and Lowes for their victories, and to all the other EIPS students who participated in Skills Alberta.
