Legislature river water feature opens for long weekend

The Alberta Legislature has opened up for the May long weekend after construction to revamp the area.

The new features include accessibility options, including sloped entry points for visitors with mobility challenges to be able to still interact with the water.

“The inclusive and inviting nature of the legislature grounds is a symbol of what it means to have a house of democracy that is open to everyone we serve,” stated Ric McIver, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

The reflecting pool, cascade fountains and dome fountain were built in the 1970’s but were shut down in 2020 for repairs. Almost 4,000 Albertans voted for a new river feature to be added to the legislative grounds in 2023.

The depth of the reflecting pool is about 6 inches deep. The new river feature includes a water spray and light feature to complement the existing structures.

The Government of Alberta spent $12 million on the project, with the federal government contributing another $8 million, for a total of $20 million.
