St. Albert to host Oilers Watch Parties

St. Albert City Council has voted unanimously to host watch parties for the Edmonton Oilers if they make it to the Stanly Cup Finals.

St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron announced yesterday that she was calling a Special Council meeting for that afternoon to vote on pulling some funds from the stabilization fund to set up a big screen at Servus Place for the community to gather and support the team.

The responses are mixed on the result of this vote, with some fans of the game excited by the news, while others are concerned about the effect on the local sports bars and other locations showing the game.

One Facebook comment read “Why would we support local businesses showing the games right?”.

Other fans are concerned about this early planning jinxing the back-to-back finals appearances for the Oilers.

Mayor Cathy Heron posted her vision for the event on Facebook, inviting food trucks to come and serve the fans, with attendees bringing lawn chairs to enjoy the games outside.

The Oilers are up two games to one against their Western Conference Finals opponent, the Dallas Stars, with game 4 taking place in Edmonton tonight at 6 p.m..

Let's Go Oilers!
