Strathcona County RCMP Warn of Fake Jewelry Scam

A common scam has hit the streets of Strathcona County — a scam where individuals sell victims fake jewelry at suspiciously low prices.

Strathcona County RCMP have received four reports of this scam between May 17 and 20, where individuals will be approached on roadways or in parking lots by people asking to exchange jewelry for abnormally low sums of money, or sometimes even goods like gas.

These encounters are often accompanied by fabricated stories of financial struggles, oftentimes while “on vacation”. The scammers are usually seen driving newer rental vehicles, sometimes with children accompanying them.

Strathcona County RCMP want to remind residents that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is, asking individuals to refrain from purchasing anything, especially high value items from street-side vendors. They ask to ensure that you’re purchasing high value items from credible sources.
