St. Albert RCMP warn against online fraud after senior loses $100,000

St. Albert RCMP are reminding residents of the importance of common sense online after a senior lost close to $100,000 over the past year in an online scam.

It started after the individual clicked on an AI-generated advertisement for an investment group run by the Liberal party of Canada and its leaders. Over the course of a few months, the individual sent tens of thousands of dollars to the scammers to “invest the money”. It was months before the individual’s family learned of the money transfers.

St. Albert RCMP remind the public that online scams can happen to anyone. People who run these fraud schemes are professional criminals, and the scams are often elaborate and convincing. In 2024, investment fraud cost Canadians 310 million dollars.

If you have been a victim of fraud or want to know what to watch for online that may indicate a scam, visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
