Fort Saskatchewan has updated its traffic bylaw to align itself with Provincial regulations on e-scooters.
Personal e-scooters, electric skateboards, hoverboards, and other similar miniature vehicles are now prohibited from use on all public roadways, sidewalks, and trail systems. They may only be used on private property.
Director of Protective Services Coreen Rayner stated that it’s not a change of local preference, but a matter of provincial law. “The Traffic Safety Act prohibits personal e-scooters on public roads and spaces unless they are part of a provincially approved shared e-scooter program. The City’s bylaw must align with the province’s mandate.”
Cities like Edmonton and Calgary operate a shared e-scooter program under special exemptions from the provincial government.
This change is not popular with the public, even since the passing of the provincial act. Most people are confused as to why e-scooters are banned but e-bikes are allowed on all public roadways, sidewalks, and trails.
