Edmonton Riverhawks play a record-breaking 18 inning game

The Edmonton Riverhawks game on June 7 went much later than expected, when the Hawks and visiting Bellingham Bells sent the game to 18 innings and well into the night.

Edmonton went up early with a run in the first, before both teams scored a run in the fourth inning. The Bells tied it up in the seventh, before each team went on a dry streak.

It ended up being a disappointing night for Edmonton fans, with the Bells finishing them off a run in the 18th inning, and the Riverhawks weren’t able to respond in the bottom of the inning.

The game neared 5 hours long, falling just 14 minutes short. The start time was 7:07 p.m., with the game not wrapped up until 7 minutes to midnight.

Maybe it was an unlucky jersey — The Riverhawks showed off their Alternate Identity for the first time on the night of 7th. They took the field under the name The Green Onion Cakes, an homage to one of Edmonton’s favourite treats. And yes, green onion cakes were available at RE/MAX arena during the game.

The 18-inning game sets a record for the Riverhawks, as well as marking their first loss of the season. They proceeded to lose their game on June 8 to the Bells, with Edmonton finishing the series 1-2.

The Riverhawks now stand 4-2 on the season, heading on a road trip starting with a three-game stint in Kelona, before another three-game series in Kamloops.
