St. Albert City Council implements engineering standards for gravel parking lots

The City of St. Albert has voted to create engineering standards for the gravel roads and parking lots that are located within the city.

This follows a motion from Councilor Sheena Hughes during the meeting on June 3, in which she said that standards for the 16 gravel lots within the city have “fell through the cracks”.

Hughes submitted an information request early in May, asking how much it would cost to reconstruct the current lots for both Lacombe Lake Park and Botanical Park. The response is that the gravel lots are not part of an asset management plan, and so there is no information to determine accurate cost estimates.

City staff told the council that, although there are no official standards, they are assessed and gone over with a grader on a regular basis to rake up loose gravel and prevent potholes. Lacombe Lake parking lot is done every 10 days, while gravel roads are done weekly.

“This is something that I think is an asset that is being used by both our staff and by public in various parking lots and various roads and needs to be done,” Hughes said.

The council approved up to $65,000 to have the Municipal Engineering Standards updated to include specifications for gravel roads and parking lots. The funds will be drawn from the Stabilization Fund.

The motion was passed in a 6:1 vote, with the only vote against being Coun. Mike Killick.
