Lloydminster RCMP received an alert on the morning of June 12 about an object that looked like a pipe bomb in the backyard of a residence on 41 Street near 49 Avenue. The Alberta RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit was moved in, and it was confirmed — it was a pipe bomb.
The explosive was managed to be disarmed and dismantled, but the community is shaken nonetheless, especially with RCMP warning that there may be more.
“It is unknown at this time whether this was an isolated incident or if there are other pipe bombs in the area,” Lloydminster RCMP said in a statement on June 12. “The public is asked to remain vigilant, not to approach any suspicious object and to report their findings to their local police.”
There are currently no reports of any additional explosive devices being found in Lloydminster or the surrounding area.
Lloydminster residents expressed concern about the situation online, with one resident sharing on Facebook how they saw the heavy police presence in the area and had no clue it was as serious as an explosive.
“I saw the area cordoned off when I drove by – never in my wildest imagination would I think it was because of a pipe bomb… Scary.”
Updates are expected as the investigation continues.
