Edmonton Company sentenced for workplace injuries

An Edmonton drilling company was sentenced on June 4 for a workplace injury incident that happened in 2022.

TAQA Drilling Solutions Inc. pleaded guilty to one charge under occupational health and safety (OHS) laws after some injuries faced by a worker while disassembling oilfield drilling equipment on March 23, 2022.

The worker was reportedly struck by a projectile, causing serious injuries.

The company pleaded guilty to one county under the OHS code for failing to provide safeguards if a worker could come into contact with objects thrown by machinery or equipment. There were initially eight other counts, which the Crown withdrew.

TAQA Drilling Solutions was ordered to pay $126,000 to the Glenrose Hospital Foundation for neuromodulation research at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.

Both the company and the Crown have 30 days to appeal the conviction or the penalties.
