Olds RCMP seize $60,000 in illegal cigarettes during traffic stop

On June 8 at about 9 a.m., Olds RCMP received a call about an erratic driver that had been allegedly driving at over 150 km/hr, swerving between lanes and almost hitting other drivers.

The vehicle was stopped by the RCMP, and a traffic stop was initiated on Highway 2, which the driver was headed southbound on.

Officers saw illegal, unstamped cigarettes in plain view during the stop, and a 37-year-old male from Spruce Grove was arrested as a result.

Two charges will be laid against the individual, one count of Frauds upon Government and one charge of Possession of untaxed tobacco. As of right now, the name of the individual has not been released as the charges have not been sworn before the courts.

The male was released on an appearance notice, and his court date is set for August 25 in Didsbury.

“Olds RCMP remains fully committed in building safer communities by working in partnership with our community, as well as through investigative and enforcement efforts to achieve this goal,” stated Sgt. Jamie Day, Detachment Commander of Olds RCMP.

Olds is a town of just under 10,000 people, located roughly halfway between Red Deer and Calgary.
