Strathcona County seeks 750 workers for county election

Strathcona County is preparing for its upcoming municipal elections later this year, and part of that includes hiring temporary employees to run the polling stations.

This year, Strathcona County is estimating about 750 workers will be needed to run the stations and count the votes this October.

The election takes place on October 20, with advance voting dates from October 6 to 18. Voters will cast ballots for mayor, ward councillors, and public or Catholic school trustees.

“Working the election is a great way to support democracy in our community and helps ensure a smooth and efficient voting process,” said Jacqueline Roblin, Strathcona County Manager, Legislative Projects. “Every position is critical, and we appreciate every worker who helps to make election day a success.”

Positions for the election include presiding deputy, assistant presiding deputy, ballot box attendant, ballot clerk, registration clerk, address clerk and door attendant.

This year also includes a new position, the ballot counter, which involves working an evening shift on election day starting at about 7:30 p.m. until the count concludes.

Ballot counters are required this year due to new provincial regulations banning the use of electronic vote counters in municipal elections.

Worker compensation varies based on role and whether a person works on election day or during advanced polling days. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, and hiring is open until all positions are filled.
