Police are investigating a fatal collision that took place during the afternoon of June 17 which left one man dead.

At about 1:30 p.m. on June 17, a van had pulled over to the side of the road on Whitemud Drive near the 111-street overpass, and the driver got out of the vehicle to inspect something on the van.

A semi-truck travelling eastbound on the road struck the man.

The backside of the van was also hit and the semi ended up on a grassy embankment to the side of the road.

The man was declared dead on the scene, and a girl who was in the back of the vehicle during the accident was taken to the Stollery Children’s Hospital as a precaution. The girl is not believed to have been injured.

As a result of the accident, traffic was backed up to 156 street in the west end, as some sections of roadway were closed to assist in the removal of debris and to ease the investigation.
