The 2025 North American Cup Series is taking place over the weekend at Climb YEG in Edmonton.
The competition features over 150 climbers from Canada, the United States of America, Mexico and Columbia, with an estimated 6,000 spectators and 25,000 virtual viewers via the Climbing Escalade Canada YouTube channel.
This is the first time that the competition is being hosted in Alberta.
“We are so proud to welcome this international climbing event to our province for the very first time,” said Andrew Boitchenko, Minister of Tourism and Sport. “With world-class facilities and a passionate community, Edmonton offers the perfect setting for athletes and fans alike. Events like this showcase Alberta’s hospitality and help elevate the sport of climbing on the international stage.”
Edmonton is one of six cities across Canada and the U.S. to host a stop on the North American Cup Series, a high-level series designed to allow clumbers to continue to develop outside of the World Cup circuit.
Christiane Marceau, the executive director of Climbing Escalade Canada, expressed her gratitude to the Alberta government for its grant of over $100,000.
“We’re deeply grateful to the Government of Alberta for its support, which plays a key role in building new infrastructure and creating meaningful opportunities for athlete development – leaving a lasting impact on the growth of climbing in Alberta and across the country.”
The Major Sport Events grant program aims to financially support organizations in planning and hosting national and international sporting events in Alberta.
The competition is estimated to generate over 2 million dollars for the local economy.
Outside of the competition, the event is featuring a community festival with try-it climbing sessions, outdoor sports demonstrations, activities, a business expo, live entertainment and food vendors.
