The City of Edmonton has announced that it will be ending photo speed radar system use within school zones, opting to use more community-focused anti-speeding measures.
Mobile radar enforcement will end on July 1 in school zones and playground zones, with permanent safety measures like speed bumps, extended curbs and improved crossings to be implemented in the near future.
“This is not a retreat from automated enforcement,” said Jessica Lamarre, the city’s director of safe mobility. “These are spaces where kids live, learn and play, and they’ve always been a top priority for our Vision Zero strategy.”
Since 2019, over 6 million dollars have been invested into playground zone upgrades, including traffic calming measures and visibility enhancements.
These changes come following recent changes to Alberta’s Automated Traffic Enforcement Guideline.
