Strathcona County launches food insecurity assistance program

Strathcona County has launched a new program called Food Finder Strathcona with the goal of helping to improve food insecurity in the county.

The new program is an interactive map designed to help residents connect with established supports within the community.

The tool maps out many food-related services, including food banks and pantries, grocery stores and farmers markets, and community gardens.

The program will also include food related events such as cooking classes, as well as cost saving tips and local stories about food insecurity.

Food Finder Strathcona was devloped by the Food Securty Action Table, with members coming from the Strathcona Food Bank, Alberta Health Services, Strathcona County Primary Care Network, and other non-profit, religious and governmental organizations.

“Access to nutritious food is a cornerstone of a healthy and thriving community,” shares Kesa Shikaze, Director of Family and Community Services.  “Food Finder Strathcona is a practical, user-friendly tool that helps residents navigate available resources. This work by the Food Security Action Table is a great first step in strengthening our collective response to food insecurity.”

The program can be found at strathcona.ca/FoodFinder. As it is just a pilot program at the moment, it will run until spring 2026 when the Food Security Action Table will evaluate the project and determine it’s future.
