Harbour Pool to host Water Safety classes during Drowning Prevention Week

The City of Fort Saskatchewan is supporting the National Drowning Prevention Week with water safety classes taking place at Harbour Pool from July 20-26.

The city is promoting the #SaferTogether message, encouraging swimmers not to swim alone, watch out for one another and take shared responsibility for water safety.

To support National Drowning Prevention Week, Harbour Pool is hosting daily Swim to Survive sessions from Monday, July 21 to Thursday, July 24 at 1 p.m.. The 15-minute sessions are open to all ages and swim levels and will teach participants how to perform a forward roll into deep water, tread water for one minute and swim 50 metres.

The Swim to Survive sessions are included with admission to the pool, with those that participate being entered to win a water safety prize pack.

In addition, Harbour Pool will observe World Drowning Prevention Day on Friday, July 25 with water safety-themed activities and a visit from Buddy the Lifeguard Dog, the facilities water safety mascot who will be handing out prizes throughout the day.

“Education, awareness, and supervision are key to preventing water-related tragedies,” says Tyson Saunderson, Team Lead Programs at Harbour Pool. “Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, or swimmer, this is a great opportunity to learn something that could save a life.”
