Calgary police officer charged with second degree murder

A Calgary police officer has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder following a shooting that took place late in May 2023.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to investigation a police shooting that took place on May 29, during which a Calgary Police Officer shot at the occupants of a van on Memorial Drive during a slow speed pursuit.

Two of the occupants were struck and later pronounced dead.

Evidence gathered during ASIRT’s investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe that offences have been committed by the officer. As required by the Police Act, the investigation was forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service to determine whether the evidence met the standard for prosecution.

Following a review of the investigation, ASIRT Assistant Executive Director Matthew Block determined that the officer should be charged. On July 14, 2025, Constable Craig Stothard was charged with two counts of second-degree murder. He was released on conditions the next day, and the matter is currently running through the courts.
