Driving an electric vehicle in Alberta is going to cost an extra $200

Starting next Thursday, people that drive electric vehicles (EV) in Alberta will have to pay an extra annual fee of $200. It will be paid as a tax when EV’s are being registered each year. The tax is comparable to the fuel tax that drivers with an internal combustion engine have to pay. The tax will be paid annually, one when the vehicle is first registered and every time drivers renew their registration after that.

Electric motorcycles, off-highway vehicles, and hybrids are exempt.
