Alberta follows other provinces by responding to U.S. Tariffs

In response to U.S. President Donald Trump declaring a 25% tariff on Canadian goods and 10% on Canadian Energy, Alberta is altering procurement practices to purchase goods and services from Alberta companies, Canadian companies or countries with which Canada has a free trade agreement that is being honoured.

Premier Danielle Smith’s government has directed Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis to suspend the purchase of U.S. alcohol and video lottery terminals (VLTs) from American companies until further notice. Approximately 10% of liquor sold in Alberta is imported from the United States.

In the coming weeks, Alberta’s government will augment these efforts by launching a “Buy Alberta” marketing campaign in grocery stores across the province.

Prior to the implementation of the U.S. Tariffs this week, the United States was Alberta and Canada’s largest trading partner.
