The City of Fort Saskatchewan is moving forward with updates to its Land Use Bylaw, focusing next on the Downtown Gateway District (DGD). This area, located along 99 Avenue, serves as a vital connection between the city’s historic downtown and Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. It features a mix of residential, commercial, and office spaces, making it an important part of Fort Saskatchewan’s future development.
As part of the process, the city has drafted new regulations for the DGD based on feedback gathered during public engagement in 2022. The updated plan aims to preserve the district’s unique character while supporting local businesses and guiding future growth. The draft divides the DGD into six sub-places, each with specific regulations tailored to its current development patterns and future potential. These changes align with Fort Saskatchewan’s broader Municipal Development Plan, which outlines long-term goals for sustainable and strategic growth.
Residents and business owners are encouraged to review the draft regulations and provide feedback before final decisions are made. Public input is being accepted from March 17-31 through email submissions or at an in-person drop-in session. City officials emphasize that the project is still in its early stages, and community engagement will play a key role in shaping the final plan.
By participating in the process, Fort Saskatchewan residents have the opportunity to help define the future of the Downtown Gateway District while ensuring it remains a vibrant and welcoming part of the city.
