A routine Thursday afternoon ended in tragedy after a woman was fatally struck by a vehicle in the Sherwood Park Mall parking lot.
Strathcona County RCMP responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m. on April 17, following reports that a 60-year-old Sherwood Park woman had been hit. Bystanders rushed in to perform life-saving measures before EMS arrived, but the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Initial reports suggest a driver’s mishap turned fatal. According to RCMP, the vehicle became stuck on a median. In an apparent attempt to dislodge it, the driver hit the accelerator too hard, propelling the vehicle forward and striking the pedestrian.
No charges have been announced at this time, and RCMP have not released the identities of those involved.
The parking lot remains partially closed as police reconstruct the scene. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact RCMP or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
