Fire Restriction Issued for Strathcona County Amid Dry, Windy Conditions

A fire restriction is now in effect across all rural areas of Strathcona County as of 4 p.m. Monday, following a combination of dry weather and high winds that have increased the risk of wildfires.

Under the restriction, all fire and fireworks permits are suspended until further notice. Banned activities include open fires such as brush burns and bonfires, burn barrels, and the use of fireworks.

Some outdoor activities remain permitted: residents may continue to use recreational fire pits with screens, chimineas, propane and natural gas fire tables, and all types of barbecues.

“It is very dry out and we need everyone to be cautious and do their part to reduce the chance of a wildfire getting out of control,” said Fire Chief Martin Paulson of Strathcona County Emergency Services. “Please phone 9-1-1 to report a fire.”

Officials stress that most wildfires are human-caused and avoidable. Residents are urged to dispose of smoking materials properly, extinguish fires thoroughly, and ensure off-road vehicles are equipped with spark arrestors. Fires should be soaked, stirred, and re-soaked. If it’s still warm, it’s not out.

Updates on the fire restriction will be posted on the County’s website, social media, and through the SC Alert system. Residents can also call or text “BURN” to 844-414-BURN (2876) for immediate information on burning restrictions.
