June 10 Wildfire Update

The Government of Alberta released a wildfire situation update on June 10th, advising individuals as to what fires are currently burning and any other key information.

There are currently 60 wildfires burning across the province in the Forest Protection Area, with 25 of them being considered out of control. Seven of them are being held and 28 of them are considered under control.

There have been almost 600 wildfires across the province since the beginning of the year, with over 600,000 hectares burned.

Crews and equipment have been arriving from all over the country, including Yukon, Quebec and many Atlantic Provinces. In addition to the American crews from Washington State, Oregon and Idaho, Montana and Hawaii have also extended a helping hand.

The province reminds residents to keep aware of emergency evacuation notices via their website. There are not currently any evacuation notices in the Edmonton area.

The government of Alberta also reminds residents to monitor their local air quality monitoring system to ensure health. Wildfire smoke contains very small particulates as small as 2.5 micrometers (0.0025 millimetres) which can get stuck in lungs and may cause health concerns including asthma attacks and throat irritation.
