Edmonton to lower fine amounts and add more tow trucks to combat parking ban avoiders

More tow trucks and lower fine prices are in store for those who don’t remove their vehicles during seasonal parking bans.

The city has voted to allocate $100,000 to contract out tow trucks during parking ban seasons to remove cars that have violated the parking ban rules.

In addition, the fine amounts have been lowered by $100, from $250 to $150. There are also now early payment alternatives which drop the ticket down to $100 if the fine is paid within seven days of the ticket being issues.

Councilor Ashley Salvador told media that the city wants “to be able to clear streets both in the winter and spring in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.”

This was one of four proposed options, with it being the second cheapest. The cheapest option, option one, was to maintain the status quo of having no towing with 5 officers focused solely on winter ticketing.

Option three was to restore staffing levels to what it was during the 2022-23 road ban season, with 15 officers, two clerks, and a supervisor, with an estimated annual cost of 1.1 million dollars.

Option four was the most expensive and involved contracting out both the ticketing and towing. The risks for option four would be less enforcement control by the city and potential inconsistencies.
