Albertans vote 63% opposed to provincial pension plan

The Government of Alberta quietly released the results of a survey it conducted about leaving the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) and creating a new plan at the provincial level – the Alberta Pension Plan (APP).

The results are not what Premier Smith hoped for, with 63 per cent of voters opposed to the idea and just 10 per cent in favour.

“While recent surveys on an APP show public opinion may be shifting, we will continue to engage with Albertans on this topic through the Alberta Next panel,” said a statement from the Ministry of Treasury Board and Finance. “The Alberta Pension Protection Act guarantees we won’t replace the CPP with an APP unless Albertans approve it in a referendum.”

This survey is in opposition to a poll conducted by Leger in February, in which 55 per cent opposed the APP and 23 per cent voiced their support in the plan. Despite those numbers still showing a vast opposition to the idea, the shift has moved even farther into the dislike of departing from the CPP.
