The federal government has stated that it will allocate over $100 million to return unproductive Alberta farmland to forest.
This plan comes as part of the 2 Billion Trees program, with the goal of capturing carbon from the atmosphere and reducing greenhouse gasses.
Some of the land that will be repurposed has been deforested for over a century, with very little productive crop being grown on that land over that time.
12 million trees will be planted through four different projects across the province, including on the Siksika Nation and around the Peace Country.
