Gale Katchur, Mayor of Fort Saskatchewan, has been honoured with the 2023 Lieutenant Governor’s Leadership for Active Communities Award.
The award was given to her on October 30 and is in partnership with the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association. She won the award in the Elected Community Officials Award category.
“It’s really about ensuring being a leader that supports inclusiveness and program services that support our community,” said Katchur. “It’s such an honour to be nominated for an award such as this.”
“It does take leadership to ensure that these programs and services are available.”
Katchur, who is the longest-serving Mayor in the history of Fort Saskatchewan, has created several community developments and initiatives, including when she brought outdoor activities to the city during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, Katchur said she couldn’t take all the credit, giving thanks to council and city staff who help make Fort Saskatchewan a better place.
“It really is about all of our staff and council who deserve this award, because it’s not just one person that makes this happen, it takes many people.”
Katchur has been Mayor of Fort Saskatchewan since 2010 when she defeated incumbent mayor Jim Sheasgreen. She’s been reelected in 2013, 2017, and 2021. She is also the second female Mayor of Fort Saskatchewan.
