It’s been 20 years since the Urban Forest project began in Fort Saskatchewan.
The project was started by former councilor Ed Marler and a group of volunteers. On October 28, 2003, they went northwest of the Highway 21/15 intersection to plant trees.
The reason for this project was to protect the Pineview neighborhood from the noise of the nearby highway.
By the end of the day, they had planted 455 trees.
All planting was done by volunteers with the Urban Forest, with all funds coming from grants from local industry and the City of Fort Saskatchewan.
By the time the project had finished in 2011, the Urban Forest planted 17,265 trees in 16 different locations.
Marler and other volunteers were at an event last month to celebrate the milestone, standing in front of the trees they had planted there 20 years before.
