Through the Socktober collection drive, Grade 4 students at Holy Spirit Catholic School raised over a thousand socks for seniors in need.
The socks were donated during a school assembly in late October, with all socks going towards the Operation Friendship Senior Society, which serves seniors who are in need.
In total, the school raised 1,120 socks through the assembly.
“The students were excited to see if we could break our goal of collecting 500 socks, and they were astonished to see that not only did we break our goal, but we more than doubled it,” said Grade 4 teacher Brandy Smith.
To collect as many socks as possibles, Smith worked with other teachers and students to create events and initiatives to stir up support for Socktober.
Operation Friendship Senior Society said that they’re grateful for the donation by the school.
“For our seniors, it represents warmth and hope, and they know that someone cares about them,” said Jimmy Morrison, community relations manager.
“A pair of socks is a basic necessity item that we sometimes take for granted.”
