Construction on the expansion of the southwest portion of Anthony Henday Drive is finally finishing up.
Recent weeks have shown construction winding down as railings have been installed alongside an extra lane open in each direction.
This expanded freeway is expected to cut down people’s commute time by an average of 15 minutes, while also helping the flow of semi-trucks.
The Henday was originally expecting 40,000 vehicles a day when it was first built, but by 2020 traffic volume was twice as much as predicted, seeing 80,000 vehicles a day.
This expansion is expected to be able to accommodate up to 120,000 vehicles a day.
The project was supposed to be done in three years but instead took four due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, weather, and staffing shortages. Many commuters have seen construction down this length of the Henday since 2019.
However, although it appears construction is finishing up, the speed limit reduction to 80 km/h will remain in effect until the spring.
