Man charged in Kingsway Mall shooting

Edmonton police have charged a man in connection to the shooting and carjacking outside Kingsway Mall.

On Tuesday, just after 7 p.m., a woman was leaving the mall when a masked man approached her with a gun. The woman ran away to a nearby vehicle, where the driver let her in.

When the suspect approached the vehicle and pointed the gun at the driver, the driver fled and called 911.

The suspect, still in the parking lot, decided to set their sights to another man who was unlocking his bicycle. The suspect confronted and shot the man before carjacking a white truck after pointing the gun at the driver.

The suspect fled the parking lot in the truck, striking a parked vehicle in the process. The suspect was eventually stopped after crashing into a building near the traffic circle at 101 Street and 118 Avenue.

The man fled the scene on foot where he was quickly arrested by police who came across the crash while on their way to Kingsway Mall.

The suspect was also found to be in possession of ammunition, 27 grams of meth, and a sawed-off shotgun.

The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Dakota Grey, and he is facing over 20 charges, including:

  • Robbery with a firearm (x2)
  • Aggravated assault
  • Dangerous driving
  • Failing to remain at the scene of a collision
  • Possession of stolen property

He is also facing nine firearms-related charges and two breaches of a release order.

At the time of the shooting, Grey was on a release order for aggravated assault with a firearm. He has a lifetime firearms and weapons ban.
