Retired EPS officer charged with obstruction

A retired Edmonton police officer is being charged with obstruction of justice following an investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

The investigation began in April of 2022 when allegations arose about officer Collin Smart falsifying arrest reports and documentation related to the execution of warrants.

On January 31, police arrested both Smart and Nadia Kelm, a traffic ticket agent, and charged them in relation to 19 separate occurrences involving falsified records.

ASIRT is a police watchdog that investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.

Both Kelm and Smart will be appearing in court on March 5.
