Federal Government announced federal housing support for Edmonton

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that the federal government will be providing some federal housing support for Edmonton.

On Wednesday (Feb. 21) the government announced $175 million in funding to build over 5,200 new housing units in Edmonton over three years through the Housing Accelerator program.

According to Trudeau, these funds will create more housing options in the city, including affordable apartments and more university and college housing.

“We are talking about a $2.4 billion investment just in Alberta,” said Trudeau about the Housing Accelerator program. “It has created, and restored, and refurbished, and enabled over 100,000 homes across Alberta.”

This comes as the City of Edmonton declared a homelessness and housing emergency, with the federal government also providing funding for homes in Banff, Sylvan Lake, Westlock, Duchess, Bow Island, and Smoky Lake.
