St. Albert sells over 200 streetlights to Fortis Alberta

The City of St. Albert sold off some more of their streetlights to Fortis Alberta last summer.

These lights are located along Ray Gibbon Drive, Rodeo Drive, the Kinsmen RV Park, Red Willow Park, and a few around Grandin Pond.

The sale earned the city about $540,000, a fraction of the surplus in St. Albert’s 2023 budget. In return, Fortis Alberta gained ownership of 206 streetlights.

The streetlights will remain in the city but may be replaced with LED bulbs as a part of a deal that Fortis Alberta made with St. Albert back in 2016.

This deal means that although St. Albert still pays the electricity for the lights, their ownership and maintenance is up to Fortis. However, St. Albert still owns the lights that are directly attached to traffic signals.

The surplus from the 2023 budget was moved into two reserves that will be used for purchasing property in the city and maintaining facilities.
