Elk Island Public Schools celebrate Substitute Appreciation Week

Staff and students in Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) are celebrating Substitute Appreciation Week.

This week gives students, their families, and community members the opportunity to give thanks to the substitutes who hold a vital role throughout the division.

“Substitutes create a positive and engaging atmosphere in the classroom,” says Rogeet Ghuman, a substitute teacher and part-time contract teacher at EIPS. “They bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm and a different teaching style, contributing to a diverse and enriching educational experience for students.”

Ghuman began teaching back in 2021 and has spoken about how his career has helped him grow as a teacher.

“I had no clue what each day would throw at me. Every day brought challenges, such as visiting different schools and meeting new people,” said Ghuman. “However, as I continued to take more steps into the unknown and get out of my comfort zone consistently, every day quickly became a chance to grow and learn. From kindergarteners to high school seniors, I keep meeting new faces with stories to tell.”

Ghuman added that the best part about teaching is connecting with children from diverse backgrounds.

“Seeing a student’s face light up when they see me in the morning as their substitute teacher, a student finally getting a tricky concept or myself getting high-fives down the hallway tells me that I’m making a difference in these kids’ lives.”
