Private event held to honour 1-year anniversary of EPS officer’s deaths

Tomorrow marks one year since Constables Brett Ryan and Travis Jordan were killed in the line of duty, and police are honouring the one-year anniversary of their deaths.

There will be a private ceremony held for the two on Saturday, with statements being sent out by the families of the fallen officers.

“We miss Brett every day. Though his absence
resonates throughout our lives, his laughter, charisma, compassion, devotion, and fierce love for his family, friends, and colleagues are forever etched in our memories of him,” wrote Ashley Ryan on behalf of the Ryan family. “Brett gave his life in service to
others, and today, we wish to honour his courage, dedication, selflessness, and profound sacrifice.”

Both Ryan and Jordan were shot and killed by a 16-year-old boy on March 16, 2023 as they responded to a domestic dispute at an Edmonton apartment.

The boy who shot the officers was also responsible for a shooting that happened at a Pizza Hut just a few days prior.

On the day that the boy shot Ryan and Jordan, the boy also shot his own mother before pulling the gun on himself and taking his own life.

“Travis wasn’t just a police officer but a beacon of strength. He had a profound impact on so many lives, and his love for his
family, friends, colleagues, and job was palpable in every action he took,” wrote Annie Jordan on behalf of the Jordan family.

Tomorrow the two officers will also have their names added to the Edmonton Police Service memorial book, with their names already added to a monument for fallen service members, which can be seen outside of the Alberta Legislature.
