Leduc Hub, the only homeless shelter in the city, will be closing its doors in May.
The hub was looking for a new location after the landlords wouldn’t extend their lease, saying that if a new home for the shelter wasn’t found by mid-February, the shelter would need to shut down.
In a letter sent to Leduc city council yesterday, the hub said that they would stop daytime programming on May 28. This programming included washrooms, food, medical treatment, addiction services, survival supplies, and more.
At the start of April, the shelter will only be used as an overnight shelter until the start of May, where the shelter will be shutting its doors.
A petition was made to keep the facility open, even reaching 1,500 signatures. City council also had several meetings about the future of Leduc Hub last month.
Despite the hub losing down, officials say that the hub continues to look for a new location, and once that location is found, the hub may open back up.
