Cigarettes cause five fires in Fort Saskatchewan

Five separate fires in Fort Saskatchewan this year have been caused by cigarettes, according to the city.

“Conditions are very dry right now, please use caution when disposing of smoking materials,” wrote the city in a post made to its Facebook page.

The city also gave tips on preventing cigarette fires, like never ectinguishing cigarettes in lawns or gardens, as smouldering can continue for hours before a fire begins.

They also ask that residents keep from flicking cigarettes over railings or out of car windows. It’s best to dispose of cigarettes in a deep, sturdy metal container, or in a commercially-made ashtray.

The City of Fort Saskatchewan has a fire advisory in effect as firefighters in the province are currently battling over 60 blazes.
