Two fires involving batteries were reported in Strathcona County over the weekend, prompting significant emergency responses.
The first incident occurred early Saturday morning around 3 a.m. in Collingwood Cove. Firefighters and EMS responded to a structure fire where the blaze was initially detected on the porch. Despite the building being evacuated before their arrival, the fire had spread to the attic and insulation.
Twenty-one firefighters worked to control the blaze, which was brought under control within 20 minutes. However, it took additional time to fully extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported, but the damage is estimated at $400,000. The fire was traced back to a lithium battery.
On Sunday, a separate fire broke out in Clarkdale Meadows involving a 12-volt car battery. The fire affected multiple vehicles, and was caused by a malfunction in the battery charger. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident as well.
