Car theft rise in Fort Saskatchewan calls for RCMP to urge citizens to take precautions

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP are urging residents to take extra precautions following a recent uptick in thefts from motor vehicles. Over the past 10 days, officers have responded to 23 reports of vehicle thefts, primarily in the Old Fort, Downtown, Sherridon, and Pineview areas. Police have noted that most of these thefts involved vehicles that were left unlocked.

To help prevent becoming a victim, RCMP advise residents to:

  • Ensure vehicles are securely locked.
  • Remove valuables such as tools, wallets, and electronics from vehicles.
  • When possible, park vehicles indoors.
  • Report thefts to the police.
  • Remove garage door openers from vehicles to prevent easy access to garages and potentially the home.

“We know that a small number of active criminals can impact many people,” said Staff Sergeant Terry Hyggen of the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP. “We ask residents to take these preventive measures while we work to identify and apprehend these criminals.
