Jasper, and other communities in Alberta and B.C. are getting AI powered wildfire detection systems

Jasper is set to join nine other communities in British Columbia and Alberta that will receive AI-powered wildfire detection systems by 2025. The technology, developed through a partnership between Vancouver-based Sensee Net and Rogers, aims to enhance early wildfire detection and response.

The system will employ a combination of sensors, cameras, satellites, and artificial intelligence. Detection sensors and cameras will monitor the environment, and any anomalies detected will be analyzed by AI. Early warnings will then be sent to firefighters to improve response times.

A test conducted by the federal government last year in Vernon demonstrated the system’s capabilities, detecting a fire in just 36 seconds.

The new cameras and sensors are expected to be operational by early spring 2025. There are plans to expand the technology to additional communities across Canada in the coming years.
