Edmonton man charged in connection with U.S. Homeland Security child exploitation Investigation

An Edmonton man has been charged in connection with a child pornography investigation led by U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

According to Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), HSI notified them in August about an ongoing investigation into child sexual exploitation in Florida. It is alleged that 54-year-old Trevor Smiley engaged in conversations and shared child sexual exploitation material with an individual in Florida.

Jason Davis from Cooper County, Florida, was reportedly taken into custody as part of the investigation. Following Davis’s arrest, authorities discovered a large-scale online group chat dedicated to sharing images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children.

ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit arrested Smiley on August 28 and executed a search warrant at his residence. During the search, ICE seized various electronic devices.
