EIPS to Break Ground on New $53 Million School in Sherwood Park

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) will officially begin construction on a new K-9 replacement school in Sherwood Park with a groundbreaking ceremony on September 12, 2024. The new school, located on Fir Street, will replace École Campbelltown and Sherwood Heights Junior High, and is set to open in fall 2026.

The ceremony will feature remarks from local dignitaries, including Cathy Allen, EIPS Board Chair, Alberta’s Minister of Technology and Innovation Nate Glubish, and Strathcona County Mayor Rod Frank. Elder Wilson Bearhead will offer reflections, while Sunny Sandhu, the new school’s principal designate, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.

“This school represents a long-awaited achievement for our community,” says Allen. “Thanks to the advocacy of Trustee Trina Boymook and local families, we are creating a space that enhances student learning and fosters a strong sense of community.”

The $53 million facility will accommodate 1,015 students and include a three-storey building, two gymnasiums, and an expansive playground. The school will feature specialized spaces for arts, sciences, and physical education, making it a hub for creativity and academic growth.

Minister Glubish emphasized the school’s role in the community, stating, “This state-of-the-art facility will inspire generations of young minds and become a cornerstone for education in Sherwood Park.”

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place from 10 am to 11:30 am at Sherwood Heights Junior High.
