The Edmonton Oilers have announced the signing of defenceman Travis Dermott to a professional tryout agreement. Dermott, who spent last season with the Arizona Coyotes, recorded 2 goals, 5 assists, and 26 penalty minutes in 50 games. The 27-year-old has previously played for the Vancouver Canucks and the Toronto Maple Leafs, having been drafted 34th overall by the Leafs in the second round of the 2015 NHL Draft.
Over his seven NHL seasons, Dermott has accumulated 16 goals and 46 assists in 329 games, averaging 16:03 in ice time. Prior to his NHL career, Dermott played two seasons with current Oilers captain Connor McDavid with the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters.
In other news, Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse is expected to miss the start of training camp. Nurse has been participating informally in team practices, skating, and shooting normally. However, he must observe from the sidelines during body contact drills as he continues to recover from a lingering playoff injury. The Oilers are hopeful that Nurse’s issue is minor and that he will be ready for the season opener.
