Alberta dentists facing sexual assault charges

Dr. Shouresh Charkhandeh, a dentist in Alberta, has been charged with sexual assault related to alleged incidents that occurred between January 2012 and May 2013 in Edmonton. The formal charges were filed on August 21.

Dr. Charkhandeh faces four counts of sexual assault and one count of threatening to cause bodily harm during a sexual assault. Court documents have not disclosed the specifics of the incidents leading to these charges.

In addition to the criminal charges, Dr. Charkhandeh has been under scrutiny by the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta. In 2022, a college tribunal found him guilty of unprofessional conduct related to non-consensual sexual acts. However, as the Alberta Court of Appeal has stayed the Appeal Panel of Council’s decision pending an appeal, Dr. Charkhandeh’s permit remains active on the main register.

Dr. Charkhandeh’s first court appearance is scheduled for September 23.
