Metis Nation- Saskatchewan has withdrawn from the Metis National Council

Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) has officially withdrawn from the Métis National Council (MNC), a decision made unanimously by MN-S officials during a provincial Métis council meeting yesterday.

The withdrawal stems from concerns raised by MN-S members regarding the legitimacy of some citizens within the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO). MN-S Vice President Michelle LeClair noted that there is a growing sentiment among MN-S citizens that the MNC has become irrelevant.

This decision follows ongoing tensions, as First Nations leaders in Ontario have questioned the legitimacy of MNO communities, accusing the organization of identity theft.

In response, the MNO expressed disappointment at the MN-S’s decision and defended the transparency and integrity of its citizenship registry, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining accurate representation of Métis identities.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges within Métis governance and identity across Canada. Further developments are anticipated as the community responds to these changes.
