Edmonton City Council has taken steps to ban the sale of knives in convenience stores by passing a motion to create a new business class license for corner stores.
Allan Bolstad, a representative from the Alberta Avenue Community League, stated that local store owners were reluctant to voluntarily remove knives from their shelves. Some owners expressed concerns that residents might need them for self-defense and similar purposes.
City council learned that the implementation process could take approximately two years, as convenience stores will need to renew their business licenses, and councillors must still approve the bylaw.
The new business class license will specifically target convenience stores and will not affect sporting or outdoor goods retailers that sell knives.
Council is expected to discuss funding for communication with businesses and bylaw enforcement during budget talks later this month.
