Another beluga whale dead in Marineland

A beluga whale has died at Marineland in Ontario, marking the fourth such death in the past year. Since 2019, the facility has reported the deaths of 16 belugas and one killer whale. Additionally, three out of the five belugas sold to Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut have also died since their transfer.

Marineland remains the only facility in Canada that holds whales in captivity. Ontario’s animal welfare services launched an investigation into the tourist attraction in 2020. A year later, the province declared all marine mammals at the facility to be in distress due to poor water quality and mandated that the park address the issue.

The current status of the investigation is unclear, as there has been little information released to the public. Concerns about animal welfare at Marineland continue to grow as the facility faces scrutiny over its treatment of marine mammals.
