Alberta UCP welcomes back MLA Jennifer Johnson after controversial remarks about transgender youth

The Alberta United Conservative Party (UCP) has welcomed back MLA Jennifer Johnson, who was previously removed from the party after making controversial remarks comparing transgender youth to feces. Johnson, the MLA for Lacombe- Ponoka , claims she has grown personally and professionally during her 17 months as an independent MLA.

Johnson was expelled from the UCP last year after a 2022 recording surfaced in which she likened transgender youth to a batch of cookies laced with a small amount of feces. At that time, UCP leader Danielle Smith stated that Johnson was not welcome in the party.

Now, Johnson will rejoin the UCP when the Legislative Assembly reconvenes on October 28. Her return raises questions about the party’s stance on LGBTQ+ issues and its commitment to inclusivity.
